Brother D Chords and Progression

This is the most common D Major chord shape known to man. It was invented before the wheel.

Major chords use the Root, Major 3rd and Perfect 5th degrees of the scale.

Sus chords also use the 4th degree of the scale that the chord is built on. In this case, the 4th is the open G string. All you need to do to play the Dsus chord is lift your index finger off the 3rd fret of the G string that you are using the play the D Major chord with to sound the open G string which will give you the Dsus chord.

'sus' stands for suspended - not suspicious!

Brother D Scale Suggestions

1. D Major Scale - 4th Position - Two Octaves

Here is the guitar tab for a common shape of the D Major scale. Make sure you don't play the scale up and down. Skip notes, play only two or three notes and experiment with other variations you can think of to come up with your own guitar licks.

E|---------------------------5-7-9-10-
B|--------------------5-7-8-----------
G|-------------4-6-7------------------
D|------4-5-7-------------------------
A|-5-7---------------------------------
E|--------------------------------------

2. D Major Scale - Open D String

Playing a scale on one string is a very cool thing to do. Especially on the D string as that string has a really nice tone and feel.

3. Open D String Guitar Lick

Here is a guitar lick you can play on the D string. Find your own rhythm and feel to make the notes come alive off the neck.

Remember, always remember: play with soul.

Brother D Bass Tab

The bass guitar line keep the pulse of the tune by playing an eighth note pattern over the 4 bar progression. It starts on the Root note and moves to the Major 3rd then walks down from the 5th to the 4th and back to the 3rd and then plays the b7 (flat 7th) before returning to the Root note D.

Come up with another bass line by adding the Major 6th note located on the 4th fret, the flat 7th at the 6th fret and up to the D Octave all on the 7th fret of the G string.

G|---------------------------------------------------------------------------
D|--------4-7-5-4----------4-7-5-4----------4-7-5-4---------------4------
A|-5-5-5----------3-5-5-5----------3-5-5-5----------3-5-5-5-3-5----5-3-
