Rockabilly jam track: Cowboy Kent Strut is a progression with a bit of a swing in it's step that is named after a hip stray cat friend of free jam tracks who requested some rockabilly jam tracks.

Backing track instruments: electric guitar, fretless bass and drums.

Progression: A I-IV-V 12 bar progression: C, F, C, G, F, C, G.

Suggestions: Wear bowling shoes to make your playing sound cooler!

Cowboy Kent Strut Chords and Progression

The C Major chord I'm playing on the jam track is your everyday garden variety C Major chord. The F Major chord I'm playing with my thumb hanging over the neck to fret the low E string. You could also play a barre chord but it makes it harder to change from the C to the F if you do. The G chord is a G5 chord as I'm not playing the 3rd note in the chord.

The Riff from the G5 down to the F and up to the C chord in the 9th and 10th bars. This is where you hear the guitar and the bass walk down from the G to the F and then walk up to the C. It's a cool little walking bass line that ties the chords together.

First you play the G on the 3rd fret of the 6th (low E) string and then you play the rest of the G chord and while you let it ring out you walk from the G down to the F note on the 1st fret via the 2nd fret. When you reach the F at the 1st fret you then walk up to the C chord by playing the 3 notes that lead into the C: the open A string, then the 1st and 2nd frets of the 5th (A) string before you read the C. Once you hit the C you can then strum the rest of the C chord.

Walking bass lines like this are a really nice way to move between chords. They are fun to play and they add a lot to the music.

Cowboy Kent Strut Bass Tab

The bass line is playing on the 1st and 3rd beats of each bar. To give it more of a kick pluck the strings hard so they snap back to the neck and make a slap sound. You can also mute the strings on the 2nd and 4th beats (the back beat) of each bar and slap the strings with your picking hand with the fist closed.

To practice the muted back beat keep the strings muted with your left hand and tap the strings using a lightly close fist with your right (picking) hand. Practice this with a metronome or play-along with some rockabilly tunes from great artists like The Stray Cats.

Check out the Lee Rocker Slap Bass DVD if you want to really learn how to capture the whole rockabilly bass sound. Even if you play a fretted electric bass it's worth watching. Or if you are a guitarist or drummer for that matter. It's a great video by one of the best rockabilly bassists on the planet.
