Laid back rock jam track: The Coolest Band in the World is a blues based groove all the way from Texas.

Backing track instruments: electric guitar, fretless bass and drums.

Progression: G5 and C Major. A simple 4 bar progression with a hypnotic rhythm that consists of the I chord to the IV chord and back again.

Suggestions: Play the G Major scale over this jam track.

Float like a Butterfly Chords and Progression

Each chord is being played with a repetitive 3 note rhythm. The rhythm consists of two down strokes followed by an upstroke. Play the G5 on each upstroke or just the open D, G and B strings as you move between each chord.

Note also that your little finger can stay on the 3rd fret of the 1st (high E) string the whole way through the progression. This will help anchor your hand, making it easier to change back and fourth between the two chords.

Float like a Butterfly Scale Suggestions

G Major is a fine choice of scale to play over the entire jam track.

You can check the fast stuff at the door with this one. Instead come up with some slow rock ballad licks.

Epic rock licks!

1. G Major Scale - 2nd Position - Two Octaves

E|-------------------------------2-3-5-3-
B|--------------------------3-5----------
G|-------------------2-4-5---------------
D|------------2-4-5----------------------
A|-----2-3-5-----------------------------
E|-3-5------------------------------------

2. G Major Scale - 7th position starting on the Major 7th note F#

Here we are starting on the Major 7th of the G Major scale which is the F# one fret below the Root note G. Just playing between these two notes sounds pretty cool. Then I've added the Major 2nd on the 10th fret of the 2nd (B) string, the Major 3rd which is located at the 7th fret of the 1st (high E) string and the 4th and 5th notes of the G Major scale.

The only note I haven't put below is the 6th note of the G Major scale, E, which you can play if you move to the 12th fret on the 1st string. I've left this out so you can just concentrate coming up with guitar licks in the one position (7th position).

You'll find you can come up with some pretty cool solos staying in this one position using only these 6 notes. Almost enough to build a career on!

E|---------7-8-10-
B|-7-8-10---------
G|-----------------
D|-----------------
A|-----------------
E|-----------------

3. G Major Scale on the G string

This is the pattern you want to use if you've been jamming at the Fillmore East for the past 4 hours playing the most epic guitar solo ever heard by the crowd of tie-dyed-t-shirt-wearing hippies and you've broken every string on your guitar except your G string.

E|----------------------
B|----------------------
G|-0-2-4-5-7-9-11-12-
D|----------------------
A|----------------------
E|----------------------

Float like a Butterfly Bass Tab

The bass guitar bounces between the I and the IV chords using the Root and 5th notes of the chords with a small walk from the b7th (flat 7th) up to the Root note on the 4th beat of the 3rd bar.

Another walk you could do is to walk up to the IV chord (the C Major chord) from the 1st fret on the A string to the 2nd fret and then to land on the 3rd fret which is the Root note C of the IV (C Major) chord.

You could also play the bass line up an entire Octave. Simply playing the same bass line up the octave adds a different sound for the listener and more variety for the bass player.

G|--------------------------------------------------
D|----------------------------------------------5---
A|-----3-3-----5--3-3-----5---3----------3-3---3-
E|-3-3-----3-3--3-----3-3---3---1-2-3-3----------
