Free Songdog
mp3: Free Songdog Time/size: 6 mins 9 secs/8.7mb. 118 beats per minute/bpm Southern rock jam track: This jam track is based on the Southern Rock classic Free Bird by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Backing track instruments: acoustic guitar, fretless bass, organ and drums. Progression: The progression I'm playing here is: G5, D, E minor, F, C, D. Just like in the verse to Free Bird I'm playing those chords four times through and then repeating the F, C, D a further 3 times. If we call that 1 round then the whole jam track goes 4 rounds. The actual song Free Bird has an intro section and breaks between the two verses which use the same chords as are in the verses. Suggestions: Put on Free Bird and work out some of the licks to jam over with Free Songdog. You don't need to learn the whole solo. Just take one part, a phrase or even a couple of notes to get you started. Think hard about the notes you are playing and then forget about the notes you are playing. Focus on playing from your heart with as much feel and soul as you can reach. Which should be from your head down to your toes. Just like The Buddy Guy does it. Chords: The tab for the chord shapes I'm playing are below. Note for the F Major chord I'm not playing the high E string. Thanks to Jimi Hendrix I like to play F Major chords with my thumb over the neck.
When I play the D the first time before I repeat of the F, C and D chords I am playing the open G string and then fretting the 2nd fret with a hammer on which gives us the D Major chord. I've written out the guitar tab for it below. I played this because: not only it is a very nice part that the rhythm is playing in the song Free Bird, but it also alerts you that you are about to repeat F, C and D 3 times.
