Here are 5 tips that will help you become a better songwriter:

1. Finish What You Started

One of the biggest mistakes people make when writing is that they don't finish what they started. Even if you haven't come up with the greatest song in the world, it's better to complete a piece you are working and move on, than to end up with a great big pile of notes with nothing to show for it. If you don't like what you did you can always improve next time you put pen to paper. This is the only way you will learn and develop your skills.

2. Choose One Theme Or Idea And Stick With It

You will make it harder on yourself and the listener if you use too many themes. Ideally you want to write about one simple idea. The main theme could be the chorus and then you can expand upon this in the verses.

3. Learn To Use Meter

Rhythm is one of the most important aspects of music, this especially holds true when writing lyrics. If you come up with the words first, make sure there is a good sense of rhythm and meter between each line. This will help tie everything together when you add the melody.

4. Walk Away

If you have a strong theme you will often be able to get everything down in one sitting. However sometimes you will get stuck and need to walk away from what you are doing. Let it rest for a day or two and then go back to it. As stated in tip 1 above, make sure you finish what you started.

5. Draw On Your Own Experiences

Writing songs about your own experience, thoughts and emotions will naturally give your lyrics more meaning. Think about one thing that you did today, a conversation or a thought you had. Even if you know of tunes with similar topics, something that is your point of view will sound fresh to others. After all, people do like familiarity.

Being a songwriter can be a frustrating experience. Sometimes ideas will be overflowing and other times you will find that you are stuck with writers block. If you keep trying new angles, persevere and finish lyrics then you will find songwriting will come easier as you do more of it and also become a lot more enjoyable.
