Chord Progression

As well as the chords above there is a second rhythm guitar part playing the same riff as the bass guitar. The notes are being muted with the palm of the right (picking) hand resting slightly in front of the bridge. You want to let the strings almost ring out but apply just enough pressure with the palm to dampen the sound before they totally sound.

The 12 bars that the second rhythm guitar is playing is as follows:

Howlin' Wolf Scale Suggestions

Blues scale in A.

The Blues scale consists of the Root note, minor or flat 3rd (b3rd), 4th, flat 5th (b5th), 5th and flat 7th degrees of the scale. These numbers are relative to the Major scale. If we name each degree of the Major scale the numbers 1 through 7 (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7) then the blues scales uses the number 1, b3, 4, b5, 5 and b7 with those numbers being relative to the numbers from the Major scale.

You can apply the numbers to any key. Similarly you can move the scale patterns shown below up and down the neck. The first note shown is the Root note of the scale. At the 5th fret in figure 1 we are playing the note A. This is the A blues scale pattern. If you shift the whole pattern up 2 frets then the Root note on the 6th (low E) string will be at the 7th fret which is the note B so you'll be playing the B blues scale.

You can use the above knowledge to play the blues scale in all 12 keys.

Sure nuff, it's powerful stuff.

Play it from your head down to your toes!

Howlin' Wolf Bass Tab

The bass part for Howlin' Wolf is a simple pattern playing the Root note, 5th, 4th and Major 3rd twice each and repeating it throughout. The Root note is played on each of the open strings: A, D and E. You need to play this tight and really try and lock in with the drums.

The second rhythm guitar is playing the same riff as the bass. The rhythm guitar, bass and drums really give this tune its driving pulse.
