Rock jam track: Jimmy Jam is an 8 bar jam track in the key of C.

Backing track instruments: electric guitar, fretless bass and drums.

Progression: C5, G5, C5, G5, E5, F5, G5, E5, F5, G5

Suggestions: The C Major Pentatonic scale fits over the entire progression and has the added benefit of you only needing to spend 10 minutes learning one or two simple patterns.

For people who have more of an attention span than their dog play the C Major scale (Ionian mode) over the C5 chord, G Mixolydian mode over the G5 chord, E Phrygian mode over the E5 chord and F Lydian mode over the F5 chord.

If you want to take it a step back before you use the modes above you can strip them down to their respective pentatonic scales:

C5: C Major Pentatonic
G5: G Major Pentatonic
E5: E minor pentatonic
F5: F Major Pentatonic
G5: G Major Pentatonic (as stated above - I just wrote it again because of the order of the chords).

You can just use two shapes, Major and minor pentatonic, to play over the 4 chords.

When you get comfortable playing over the chords using pentatonic scales you can add the additional two notes to each of the four chords to get the modes above.

Not that you'll be using a lot of notes from each mode as the chord changes are fairly rapid. What you want to be doing though is using specific notes that relates to the chord tones of those chords. It's a chord-scale relationship type of mentality and will get your fingers, ear and brains working so that you'll eventually become smarter than your dog.

Chord Progression

The chord progression has lead in notes to the C5 and G5 chords as shown below.

When you get to the chords they are played multiple times. You need to break up the guitar tab below and play the C5 and G5 chords twice before you move from the C5 to the E5, F5 and G5 chords (that section is also played twice).

You'll get it if you listen to the jam track. If you have any trouble with it you should ask your dog for some help.

Note - the rhythm guitar part sounds cool if you rock it up a bit and play it with some distortion.

Jimmy Jam Scale Suggestions

As per the scale suggestions above - let's get busy. Below is the guitar tab for the Major and minor pentatonic scale mentioned above. You can just use pattern 1 over the entire progression if you want. Otherwise you can patterns 2, 3 and 4 over their respective chords.

If you want to turn up the heat and go modal then you need to add 2 more notes to each of the 4 patterns below. To do this, add the 2 notes to natural notes (no sharps or flats) to each pattern below. i.e. only notes from the C Major scale are used in each of the modes.

If you can use all 4 scales below you are doing really well. If you add the notes and start playing the modes you should give yourself a pat on the back, it's a fair amount of work to get comfortable with it.

Good luck and have fun!

Jimmy Jam Bass Tab

The bass tab to Jimmy Jam is a constant eighth note pattern that has walking bass lines into the C and G chords in the progression. The aim of the bass part here is to mute each string with your playing hand. To do this you need to stop each note from ringing out by dampening the string with the finger you are going to play the next note with.

Make sure you play the notes with consistent and strict time otherwise you'll lose the pulse of the song.
