mp3: My Fingers Are Killing Me Backing Track
wma: My Fingers Are Killing Me Backing Track

Time/size: 4 mins 34 secs/6.4mb. 90 beats per minute/bpm

Rock backing track: The backing track is just the rhythm guitar sitting on the E5 chord that's shown below in the guitar tab. The nice thing about the rhythm guitar here is the actual rhythm being played. Basically it's lending the rhythm from drum rudiments, mostly paradiddles. It's worth looking at basic drum rudiments to learn some rhythms and co-ordination with your rhythm playing. In drumming, rudiments are written like this: R L R L, meaning Right hand, Left hand, Right hand, Left hand. R L R L etc is called a single stroke roll as you are just alternating drum strokes between your right and left hands. A paradiddle is R L R R - L R L L. Right hand, Left hand, Right hand, Right hand followed by Left hand, Right hand, Left hand, Left hand. You can use these, and other, drum rudiments on the guitar. If you are playing rhythm guitar you can use your thumb and your fingers both on your right hand. If you look at the guitar tab below for the E5 Rhythm Guitar chord I'm playing you'll see I'm playing the open E string and then the E5 chord. I'm playing the open E with my right thumb and the E5 chord with the fingers on my right hand. If you want to use drum rudiments to come up with some rhythms you could take the R from a drum rudiment to be your thumb on your right hand and the L from a drum rudiment to be your fingers on your right hand.

If you do that you'll start playing some really cool rhythms.

Here are some drum rudiments that you can use to come up with your own rhythm playing:

R L R L - R L R L

R R L L - R R L L

R L R R - L R L L

R L L R - L R R L

R R L R - L L R L

If you want more drum rudiments to play around with search Stick Control by George Lawrence Stone on the internet and you'll find more rudiments like the above to last you a lifetime.

Backing track instruments: electric guitar, electric guitar, bass and drums.

Progression: The chord used for this track is E5.

Suggestions: This is a great track to play the E Major Pentatonic scale over. You can also play the E Major scale over it as well. In the tune I played most of the guitar licks are just using the E Major Pentatonic scale. Guitar Lick 4 (see below) uses the entire E Major Scale.

You can use the scales above to come up with your own guitar licks and also look at the guitar licks I'm playing on the tune that are shown in the guitar tab below. If you start playing the guitar parts I'm playing you shouldn't just learn the guitar licks I'm doing -instead you should play them a little and then muck around and come up with your own parts using similar (or the same) notes. Even playing the parts backwards will give you totally different sounds and ideas that you can take and turn into your own original guitar licks.

One of the best things you can do when learning other people's guitar parts is stuff the whole thing up, get a few of the notes right and the rest of the notes totally wrong. Instead of calling this a stuff-up or saying that you can't learn how to play other peoples guitar parts you just say 'hey look what I just came up with'.

Stuffing up other people's guitar licks is one of the best ways to find your own voice.

Embrace your mistakes.

3.02 Outro Guitar Licks, Intro/Theme Revisited and more Outro Licks based on the above

As I said at the beginning - it's fine for you to learn the guitar parts written out above but you should only think of it as a starting point. You want to take it further and come up with your own guitar parts. Choose one guitar lick above and see what you can come up with from the notes from that guitar lick. You can play the notes in a different order or use different rhythms and you'll find that you are playing your own licks taking it beyond what I've played. If you sit down with just one or two parts for an hour or so you'll probably come up with better guitar parts than I have. It will help move your guitar playing forward and above all you'll enjoy creating rather than just copying.
