Odd meter jam track: Fairly straight sounding rock in G. (110 beats per minute/bpm)
Backing track instruments: electric guitar and bass
Progression: (G-GMaj7, C-CMaj7)x4 then verse (D-C9)x3 + (D-C9-D)x1
Suggestions: Play the first 3 beats as if you were in 4/4 and then when you get to the 4th and 5th beats play them with the snare. This almost turns it into a waltz.
Time signature: This backing track is in 5/4. Just count 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 all the way through as you tap your foot on each beat. The main thing with odd time signatures (for my money) is that I don't want them to sound like they are odd time signatures. Sometimes there isn't much you can do about it but you at least want them to sound natural. Ultimately thought, it'll be something that a civilian (non-musician) can dance to, or at least tap their foot.

The verse to outshined is in 7/4. You can count along with it from the start. Count; 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. Great tune.

Suggestion(s): Play this pretty straight. You can play it totally straight and just bring in the bass drum right on the 1 where you'd normall be playing an extra beat on the hi-hat beat. ie cut the beat short to bring it round to the 1.
time signature: This backing track is in 11/8. Just count 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 all the way through as you tap your foot on each beat. That might sound like an obvious way to tell you to count it but there are a lot of different ways you can count when playing odd meters. You need to work out how to count for each different tune. It depends on how the notes/riffs are grouped. If the bar is divided into groups you can break up the count. For example on this track you could count it in 2 groups, the first in 6 and the second lot in 5. Try it - count; 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and then 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. So you have broken up the 11 to be 6 + 5 = 11.

Who would have thought that math would have one day come in handy!

Pearl Jam - Low light

This tune is mostly in 12/8 but they throw in a bar of 4 on the last grouping every now and then to make it 13/8. Count it in 4 lots of triplets and then 3 lots of triplets with 1 group of 4 when they go into the odd meter.
