02 G Let the Marching Band Go No Drums mp3wma
Time/size: 5 mins 12 secs/7.17mb
Style: Straight ahead Rock in G (130 beats per minute/bpm)
Backing instruments: electric guitar and bass
Progression is: C9-G5 over 2 bars x 4, then a G riff over 2 bars x 4.
I absolutely love Pearl Jam - that's what I had in mind when I was coming up with this track.
What kind of beat do you think Matt Cameron would play over this type of feel?
suggestion(s): Play it tight on the hi hat and snare and experiment with the bass drum. Get syncopated on the bass drum when the guitar & bass are playing the riff and then bring it in and out of a straight beat when the guitar is strumming. You can really move around on this track - keep it simply and tight or get really busy. Use a crash to accent the back beat (ie the snare).
Play around with it - that's what this website is all about - not telling you what to play or that one thing sounds better or something is right or wrong - there are no rights & no wrongs, it's all up to your ear, imagination and your soul. Music is not intellectual, it's about feel, groove, experimentation, exploration, communication and fun. Play it from your heart.
03 E Float Like a Butterfly No Drumsmp3wma
Time/size: 6 mins 23 secs/8.77mb
Style: Grunge-Rock in E (108 beats per minute/bpm)
Backing instruments: electric guitar and bass
Progression: E - F#sus7, Bsus - A7
Suggestion(s): Start off by playing a straight ahead rock beat using the hi-hats then move to the ride. As the tune goes on start playing around with syncopated notes on the bass drum. Try playing the beat with all notes on the bass drum on the off beats. Then go back to landing on the 1 and 3 and play the bell of the right on the off beats. Switch between those to beats so you always have something landing on the 1 and the 3 of the bar but not necessarily the bass drum.
Matt Cameron - playing In My Tree
The studio album version of this song was on Pearl Jam's album 'Yield'. The drumming in it is amazing with the coolest of camera angles - it's all Matt.
