08 E Funky Hotdogs mp3 wma
Time/size: 5 mins 09 secs/7.09mb
Funk jam track:Funken it up in C (114 beats per minute/bpm)
Backing track instruments:electric guitar, bass and drums
Progression: I, iii, IV over the 1st 4 bars and then it goes to the V, IV and plays the iii-IV part again. The chords are simple power chords: E5, G#5, A5 and B5.
Suggestions: Play the E minor pentatonic scale over the E5-G#5-A5 chords in the first 4 bars of the progression and then use a B Major pentatonic scales over the B5 chord and A Major pentatonic scale over the A chord.

Here is 1 octave of the E minor pentatonic scale in 7th position (ie index finger on the 7th fret):
E|--------------------------
B|--------------------------
G|-----------------7--9--
D|----------7--9---------
A|--7--10-------------------
E|--------------------------

Here is 1 octave of the B Major pentatonic scale in 6th position:
E|--------------------------
B|--------------------------
G|--------------------------
D|------------------6--10--
A|---------6--10-----------
E|--7--9--------------------

Here is 1 octave of the A Major pentatonic scale in 4th position:
E|--------------------------
B|--------------------------
G|--------------------------
D|----------------4--8-----
A|---------4--8------------
E|--5--7--------------------

I've put up the same pattern for both the A and B Major pentatonic scales. You can use this pattern anytime you are playing over a Major chord for starters. If the progression sounds Major then use this pattern just for the key the song is in to begin with. So if you are in the key of G Major then try using the G Major pentatonic scale over the whole song. The G Major pentatonic scale is the above pattern with the first note on G at the 3rd fret.

The theory I put up on this site is for beginner to intermediate players - if you want more advanced theory you should find a good teacher in your area and get stuck into the good stuff. Even if you can only afford to get 1 or a few lessons, you will always learn something off a good teacher. If you can't get to a good teacher then try and jam with other musicians, look up things on the net and read the same information from different websites. The more views you take in the more chance you have of working things out for yourself. Music theory is not right or wrong - it's just theory - you ear is a much better indication of what music is right or wrong. Take everything with a grain of salt - including this.
