01 G Bb C Leonard Skinner Rock Out mp3 wma
time/size: 7 mins 10 secs/9.88mb
style: Rock progression G5, Bb5, C5 (154 beats per minute/bpm)
backing instruments: electric guitar, bass and drums

suggestion(s): What song is it y'all wanna here? This is based on the outro/guitar solo to Lynyrd Skynyrd's Free Bird. We are talking essential rock n roll for anyone wanting to get low down and dirty and play some good ole southern rock guitar!

The G blues scale sounds pretty cool over this progression. Here's a finger pattern for the G blues scale that starts on the b7th (flat 7th) which is the F on the low E string at the 1st fret:

The G Blues Scale, starting from 1st position.
E|----------------------------
B|----------------------------
G|----------------------------
D|---------------------3--5--
A|--------1--3--4--5--------
E|--1--3---------------------

Now before I post the rest of the fingering for this position of the G blues scale we want to take a moment to look at the above notes. Start with your index finger on the low E and use your ring finger on the G (the 3rd fret of the low E string). Similarly use your index finger on the A (the 5th string) at the 1st fret. Except now we are going to shift the position. Instead of using your ring finger to play the 3rd fret of the A string - slide your hand up and again use your index finger to play the 3rd fret. You have just shifted from 'first position (i.e. your index finger on the 1st fret) to 'third position' (i.e. your index finger on the 3rd fret).

This puts you in a really good position (literally) to keep moving up the scale as you are now in the most common position for playing a G blues scale.

The G Blues Scale, 3rd position.
E|------------------------------------------3--6--
B|-----------------------------------3--6---------
G|-------------------------3--5--7---------------
D|------------------3--5--------------------------
A|--------3--4--5--------------------------------
E|--3--6------------------------------------------

The G Blues Scale lick starting and ending on1st position.
E|------------------------------------------------------
B|------------------------------------------------------
G|------------------------------------------------------
D|---------------------3--5--5--3----------------------
A|--------1--3--4--5---------------5--4--3--1--------
E|--1--3-----------------------------------------3--1--

Now with this little run you are pretty much just running up and down the blues scale starting on the b7 which is the F of the G blues scale.

Starting on the b7th for a blues, rock or any style for that matter, gives it a different sound to just starting on the Root note of the scale each time you go to start a lick or a phrase. So play around with starting from the b7th for this track and a few of the other tracks or when you are jamming with your buddies or band next. If you are starting out, it'll give you a whole new sound and approach to your guitar playing right away.
