Playing At Open Mic Nights - 7 TipsThere is a saying in sport that musicians should take note of: "Nothing beats game day practice." Open mic nights are a fantastic way for you to be able to show-case your talent. They also give you an opportunity to hone performance skills and assist you in becoming more confident when getting up on stage. Here are 7 tips for playing at open mic nights that will help you get the most out of the experience include how many songs should have prepared, how to network with other musicians and taking it to the next level. 1. How To Get A Spot On The BillFor many venues it's simply a matter of turning up, introducing yourself and putting your name down with the host at the gig. When you first arrive, it's a good idea to find out who is running the night and to let them know that you would like to perform. 2. How Many Songs Should You PlayThe number of songs will usually be determined by the MC. Usually it will be around 3 songs, although sometimes there will be early acts that will play 3 songs and then a main act that will play a 30 to 50 minute set. 3. How Many Songs Should You PrepareIdeally the minimum number of songs you should have is 5. Even if you only play 2 or 3 tunes, you will at least have some choice in what you are going to play, and have an encore on hand if need be. 4. How to Network With Your PeersTalk to the other musicians who are playing as well as members of the audience. Remember, music isn't a competition, it's a social and interactive art form, so get out there and mingle! 5. Look and LearnBe attentive when others are playing. Listen to everyone and think about what you can learn from them. 6. How To Handle Your PerformanceWhen it's your turn to be up on stage, be mindful that you are a guest of the MC and the venue. Thank the MC for giving you the opportunity to perform and to the crowd for listening. Focus on playing the best that you can and take away ideas on what you can work on to improve. 7. How To Take It To The Next LevelThe 3 P's: practice, practice, practice. The best way to improve at anything is by working at it. The more we do something the better we become. If you are respectful, network and show enthusiasm, you will more than likely be invited back. You might not be the best musician on the night, but if you are professional in your approach then you will create a lasting impression. Sitting in your living room singing songs or playing guitar is a good way to improve, but if you want to become a good performer then you need to get out there and take your act to an audience. Playing live to people, especially ones you don't know, has a tendency to add a certain amount of self doubt in anyone's mind. The more you do it, the less of a concern you will have about performing in front of others. Open mic nights are a great way for you to get live playing experience and to network with other musicians. |
